Ojos del Salado: Andes volcano climbing expedition

ABOUT TRIP

10 DAYS / 9 NIGHTS of a well design trip that is going to take you to the top of the Chilean Andes. Includes Spanish/English guide all the way, Mountain guide, camping gear, kitchen and meeting dome, 4×4 transportation, all meals, lodging at Caldera, transfers in and out from airports, permits & tickets.

DAY 1

Departing from Copiapó airport or your selected accommodation, you’ll drive across the desert to meet the Maricunga salt flat, one of the most impressive salt flats in Chile. Following the edge you’ll get to Santa Rosa lake, where gorgeous sights await for you. Here is a good idea to take short walks to let your body adapt to the thin air.

We’ll set our camp at Santa Rosa lake.

    Food: Picnic lunch + camp dinner included.

    Accommodation: 2 persons per tent.

DAY 2

After breakfast, you’ll take the first preparation hike around the mountain lake (3770masl) and to the close by hills. We’ll get lunch at the camp and set things ready to drive to Laguna Verde and its intense emerald color water.

Enjoy the amazing sights that this place offers, with eventual flamingoes and taguas (Andean coot) feeding in their waters surrounded by huge mountains.

We’ll set our camp at Laguna Verde (4337masl).

    Food: Breakfast, Camp lunch + Camp dinner included.

    Accommodation: 2 persons per tent.

DAY 3

Have Breakfast and get ready to go! we are going to climb the Mulas Muertas(5896masl). This huge climb is going to bring us wonderful 360º sights and an excellent preparation to our Ojos del Salado challenge.

We’ll get back to our camp at Laguna Verde and get a proper rest.

    Food: Breakfast, box lunch + Camp dinner included.

    Accommodation: 2 persons per tent.

DAY 4

Our legs need to be stretched so we are going to take a morning hike around the beautiful lake. After, let’s pack our gear and drive to the Atacama mountain refuge, where a little shipping container hosts climbers inside. We’ll set our camp close to this camp (5,100 masl).

    Food: Breakfast, Camp lunch + Camp dinner included.

    Accommodation: 2 persons per tent. (You can sleep in the Atacama refuge if you want, but that depends if you find a bed available; there are only 6 and can’t be reserved)

DAY 5

Today, the mission is to transport our climbing gear to the last mountain refuge (Tejos), we’ll do this by foot as our last preparation hike before the ascension to Ojos del Salado. Only 3.5 km separates us from there, but it’s going to be hard anyway.

We’ll get back to sleep at the Atacama refuge site.

    Food: Breakfast, Camp lunch + Camp dinner included.

    Accommodation: 2 persons per tent. (You can sleep in the Atacama refuge if you want, but that depends if you find a bed available; there are only 6 and can’t be reserved)

DAY 6

Breakfast and back to Tejos refuge to spend the day there, good moment to have short walk around, stretches & breathing exercises and rest.

    Food: Breakfast, Box lunch + Camp dinner included.

    Accommodation: Tejos refuge bunk bed; shared room space.

DAY 7

Let’s climb this volcano! Very early morning (4am) we’ll grab some breakfast and get ready to go. The climbing should take us between 8 and 9 hours. After the climb we’ll get back to the Tejos refuge or the Atacama refuge (depending on how we tired you are).

    Food: Breakfast, Box lunch + Camp dinner included.

    Accommodation: Tejos refuge bunk bed; shared room space.

DAY 8

This is ascencion day nº2 in case weather didn’t allow us to climb the day before or if we didn’t feel strong enough to climb the day before. If we climbed on the 7th day we’ll drive down to the coastal city of Caldera.

DAY 9

Back to the Ocean level!. We’ll drive back using the same route, giving our last sights to Laguna Verde and Maricunga salt flat. In the evening we’ll reach the city of Caldera, in front of the Ocean.

    Food: Breakfast, Pic nic lunch + Dinner included.

    Accommodation: Ckamur lodge or similar if not available. Double rooms.

DAY 10

Let’s get to the beach! White sand beaches and great seafood await for us at Bahía Inglesa, we’ll spend the morning and lunch time here before going taking you to the airport or bus station.

   Food: Breakfast, Seafood farewell lunch.

Transfer to the airport included on this day.

What you need to bring: Good camp mat, -30ºc sleeping bag, backpack, breathable thermo layers, mountain gloves, mountain quality jacket and pants, 1 liter Thermic bottle, trekking poles or “axe”(piolet), trekking shoes, resting shoes, crampons, mountain boots, sunscreen, hat, UV protection sunglasses. Clothes to change and personal cleaning things.

PRICES

This expedition departs on a fixed departure basis with 6 travelers.

You can join the fixed departure group or you can ask for a private departure if your group is up to 3 people.

If you are traveling alone or more passengers are required, please contact us to design a non-binding custom proposal for you.

The Price per person is USD 2,140

 

Payment Options

We use Paypal, which allows you to use your local credit or debit cards from home.

*Paypal commission is not included in the price.

Reservations for this expedition must be made with at least 20 days prior departure.

For Chilean citizens, we receive payments via online transfers or bank deposits too. We don’t receive checks and pays with credit cards can only be done online and in advance.

CONDITIONS

Cancellation Policy

If you decide to cancel your tour reservation, for any reason, the following are our terms:

Time frame / You receive:

  • 15 days before trip departure / 70& refund of what you have paid minus a US$20 fee for operational expenses.
  • 14  to 7 days before trip departure / 30% of your payments
  • 1 day before trip departure / 10% of your payments.

Transfer Policy

If you would like to change to a different tour or departure date after signing up, we will be happy to transfer you on a space available basis up until 10 days prior to your tour. Please provide your transfer request in writing – email is sufficient. Please note, a US$20 transfer fee will be deducted from your previous payments for each transfer, and if you later choose to cancel your tour, the cancellation deadlines will apply to the date of the originally scheduled tour.

Tour Confirmation

Místico Outdoors will confirm your trip 30 days in advance and will be done via email.

The reasons to cancel a booked tour will be due to bad weather conditions, government prohibitions or security reasons of any kind. If this is the case you will get 100% of your deposit refunded and will be happy to offer you other options.
